Saturday Video: For a Unique July 4th Celebration, Try St. John Carnival

It’s seemingly always Carnival time somewhere in the Caribbean, and the 4th of July is no exception. The prime Caribbean party spot for this important U.S. holiday: tiny St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Trust me, I know from experience.

Taking the Seaplane from St. Croix over to Cruz Bay for St. John Carnival with just a cooler of beer for luggage, no hotel reservations and very few inhibitions is one of my favorite memories of growing up in the Virgin Islands. Based on the video above from last year’s bacchanal, the good vibes surrounding the event just keep getting better.

It may not boast the sheer size and pageantry of Trinidad Carnival or Vincy Mas, but St. John Carnival is a good fete and a most unique way for Americans to celebrate their independence.

Anyway, enjoy the video, and if you’re in the U.S., the long weekend as well!

They mirror each other – fluffy white clouds sprinkled across a vibrant blue sky; lush green islets dotting the azure sea below. Travel along the north coast of St. John and you'll find scenes like this repeated all along the roadside.
