The Proud Flag of St. Kitts & Nevis
It was 35 years ago today –September 19, 1983, Independence Day – that the national flag of The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis (better known as St. Kitts & Nevis) was raised for the very first time. Designed by a local student named Edrice Lewis, the design bested 250+ entries in a national competition held in the early 1980’s. The colors and symbols are what you might expect from such a storied, verdant, and proud nation. The green is a nod to one of the Caribbean’s most fertile landscapes, rich in volcanic soil. Red symbolizes the country’s long fight for independence. Yellow reflects the abundant sunshine here. Black represents the proud African ancestry shared by the majority of the citizens in St. Kitts and Nevis. The two stars, of course, are for the islands themselves and their shared commitment to hope and liberty. Like the amazing islands it represents, the beauty of the national flag of St. Kitts and Nevis truly runs deep.
