Morning Clean Up Along Long Bay, Antigua

In a place as famous for its beaches as Antigua, you just know they take special care in keeping their shores clean and pristine. The practice doesn’t apply solely to the sandy stretches fronting the island’s resorts and hotels either. On my first morning at Pineapple Beach Club back in late-April, I awoke early for a quick 2.5-mile run out to Devil’s Bridge and back. My finish line: the far east end of Long Bay. This is the local section of the beach. It’s well away from the resort, though you can still rent beach chairs and umbrellas from local concessionaires. There’s even a small collection of shops and a seaside snack bar for when you’re hungry or needing an ice-cold Wadadli. In the early morning hours they rake the sand and tidy up the beach just as the resort’s groundkeepers do at the other end of Long Bay, the pride in keeping the beach pristine equal on both sides.
