This can’t be the way!

It’s easy to think you’ve made a wrong turn somewhere when trying to access Shoys Beach for the first time. One of my all-time favorite beaches anywhere, Shoys stretches along a near-perfect crescent of a bay in a residential neighborhood just east of the Buccaneer Hotel on our home island of St. Croix.

Like a lot of the best beaches in the Caribbean, it’s not entirely easy to access these shores. Crowds are never a factor here; the pristine always kept just so.

The reason lies in the access path to Shoys. Or, better said, the access tunnel to Shoys…

The tangle of trees arching over the path isn’t all that high either. At six feet tall, I have to crouch down pretty far to scoot through here.

For me, though, it’s well worth the extra effort, so strong is my love for this very special place.
