A few years ago, a former colleague of mine gave me the best compliment I’ve ever received… And probably ever will receive. This one bit of polite praise opened my eyes in ways that’ve changed my life forever… And allowed me to create a 2-step process to accomplishing anything. A secret process I’d like to share with you.
It’s been a few years, so I don’t remember exactly what this colleague and I were discussing at the time. It could have been about traveling, or getting lunch, or even about going to a movie… But I’ll always remember those deceptively simple words that pulled my whole life into focus:
You know what I like about you, Patrick? You do things.
It’s like the clouds parted, light burst from the heavens and angels began singing. In fact, it was kinda like that moment in How The Grinch Stole Christmas where the titular anti-hero’s heart grows three sizes once exposed to the true meaning of Christmas — giving him the strength of ten Grinches! I realized, in that moment, that all I’ve ever really wanted to be, was someone who did things.
Since then, being determined to remain a person who does things has been a blessing and a curse.
Sure, it’s kept me focused on doing, but how much doing must a man do to remain a man that does? Should I feel terrible about sitting around and doing nothing for a whole Saturday? Or can I “bank” done things to allow for some time off from all this doing?
Well, to be honest, I never came up with an answer to the frequency with which things must be done to remain a doer, but to try and remain a “man who does” I did come up with a fool-proof, 2-step process to doing ANYTHING!
I know what you’re thinking. “Really, Patrick? Do Anything?” It may be hard to believe, but this method has virtually changed my life and I guarantee, that if you follow it to the letter, you’ll be achieving more in your life than you ever imagined possible.
Ready for the secret? Here it is…
STEP 1: Set a simple goal you can achieve in basically one action.
STEP 2: Do it.
That’s it! Seriously!
Ok, for all the doubters out there, let’s put my 2-step process to the test against a very real problem in many of our lives: failure to launch. Let’s say you have some time off you’ve been meaning to use? An island getaway you’ve been meaning to take? Or a dream Caribbean destination that’s been “on your list” for years?
Here’s how you make it a reality.
Start by not falling into the trap of screwing up STEP 1. You can’t make your STEP 1 simple goal “take an amazing dream trip.” There’re too many actions that go into making that a reality. You can’t really do “take an amazing dream trip” in just one step.
Instead, you have to make the STEP 1 goal something simple, like “buy a plane ticket.” Don’t worry about the hotel, or rental car, or excursions, or when the next air fare sale might be, or anything else. (Notice that there’s no step labeled “think of everything.”)
Now with your simple “buy a plane ticket” goal set, move on to STEP 2: Do it.
In 5-10 minutes, you can complete STEP 2 by going to one website (try JetBlue), finding a flight and buying a plane ticket.
Boom. That’s it. You’ve done something!
You’ll quickly realize, now that you’ve purchased a plane ticket, that you’ll require a place to stay between the dates of your flight arriving at your destination and your flight leaving your destination. What to do? Panic? Freeze up? Scream for help?
Again, my 2-step process comes to the rescue!
Just calmly make your STEP 1 goal to “reserve a hotel room” (Tablet Hotels is a great place to look), then move on to STEP 2 and “do it.”
Before long, you’ll have chained enough achievements together to deserve a nice bit of time off from all this “doing” on a secluded, white-sand beach on your choice of dream Caribbean destination… Luckily, if you’ve followed my 2-step process, you’ll already have everything arranged!
