Sweet Sorrow Leaving Les Saintes, Guadeloupe

Sweet sorrow…

The two words eternally linked by Shakespeare have scarcely carried greater weight in my life than the bright and shiny Saturday morning six weeks ago when the unyielding pull of reality dragged me kicking and screaming away from Terre-de-Haut, one of nine islets in the fairytale archipelago that is Les Saintes.

My time spent here amounted to just under two days, but the fun and adventures I enjoyed could’ve easily filled a full week.

To be sure, I was NOT ready to leave. There was still so much more to discover.

Time and tide would have their way, though, as they always do, the 6:15am ferry slowly pushing away from the dock, turning and heading back to Trois-Rivieres at the very southern tip of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, my tears growing larger as Terre-de-Haut shrank from view…

Incidentally, the sounds of cocks crowing heard throughout the early portion of the video aren’t from roosters on the mainland in Terre-de-Haut. Those birds are actually aboard ship headed to the weekend cockfights in Guadeloupe.

Didn’t get a chance to experience that slice of Gwada culture on this trip, but you can be sure it’s on my list for my next visit, as is A LOT more time in Les Saintes.
