St Croix Travel Ritual: Conch Soup in the Sea in Frederiksted
Like a lot of frequent travelers, I’ve developed quite a few travel rituals over the years. Most of them center on must stop places, or can’t miss foods at favorite spots throughout the islands. Other times, it’s a simple act, like sipping a little sea water every first time that I hit the beach on my travels. My latest travel ritual, though, combines a bit of both. This one, which I discovered on a recent visit to St. Croix, is specific to my home island. It involves food; specifically a king-sized styrofoam cup of the most amazing conch soup available on the island. (It’s so good that I’m not sure I want to tell where I get it!) It also involves the sea and a very special beach, namely Dorsch Beach. The prime local limin’ spot for Sunday Funday in St. Croix, Dorsch is long, rocky, and runs due south from Frederiksted. The sea here is almost always flat-calm and crystal clear, perfect conditions for coolin’ in the shallows. Doing so first thing in the morning with a heaping helping of the island’s best conch soup is my new favorite way to start the day. This St. Croix travel ritual can only happen on a Saturday, the only day my cherished conch soup is sold. As for where you can get it, that bit of info will have to wait for another day… Maybe.
Wish you were here…?
