Anchored in Simpson Bay, St. Maarten: Photo of the Day
Steering your ship into St. Maarten/St. Martin affords the uncommon sailor with a wide range of docking and anchorage options. There are a good 17 marinas here, a pretty large amount for an island measuring just 13 square miles in size.
Megayachts, sloops, catamarans, schooners, sportfish, powerboats – if it floats, you’re liable to see it somewhere around here, no matter if you’re on the Dutch side or the French.
The image above showing a handful of sailboats moored in Simpson Bay, was shot from The Pelican Marina, a prime launching point for various day-sail excursions, scuba adventures, and fast ferry service to neighboring islands like St. Barts, Saba, and St. Eustatius.
The calm seas I encountered when I stopped here, along with the various restaurants, bars, shops, and two+ miles of pristine beach in the area, of course, also make Simpson Bay a pretty nice place in which drop anchor, stick and stay.
