This Friday at 6:00 am, one of the world’s great participatory active travel experiences, La Vuelta, will begin anew. The start and finish lines are in Old San Juan. In-between, riders enjoy, or endure as the case may be, a 375-mile cycling trek around the entire circumference of Puerto Rico. Longtime readers of Uncommon Caribbean may remember the Saturday Video post we published on the event back in October, but with the race kicking off this week, let’s take a look at three lesser-known Caribbean cycling adventures…
John T. Memorial Cycling Race, Anguilla
With its posh resorts, tiny size (35 square miles) and amazing sun-kissed beaches, Anguilla is one of the last places you might expect to find a cycling race in the Caribbean.

Whether you’re a serious cyclist or a laid back cruiser, bicycles provide an exhilarating way to truly experience any Caribbean destination. Tours by bus or car generally offer just a passing glimpse at attractions. On a bike, you really get to see and experience all that a destination has to offer. Plus, the attendant workout isn’t bad either.
As our favorite pro cyclist has already cautioned, traveling with your bike can be a hassle. Rentals are available virtually everywhere in the Caribbean, making it easy to strike out on your own two-wheeled adventure.
For those who prefer the added cache of company and friendly competition, however, La Vuelta de Puerto Rico is a must!

Nevis has always been known as an exclusive destination for luxury pampering, rest and relaxation, but we found during our visit there last month that it’s also a great choice for active travelers. After all, you’ve got Mt. Nevis with its lush rainforest and unique trails, so it’s no surprise that hiking is big here. What is surprising, though, is the strong popularity of another sport that on the surface may seem ill-suited to such a small island – cycling.
Why is cycling an odd fit for Nevis? Well, Nevis is tiny – 36 square miles – and basically has only one main road that encircles the island.
