Carambola (Currently), St. Croix

It remains among the most beautiful vistas one can enjoy on our home island of St. Croix – lush North Shore highlands stretching west from Davis Bay to Hams Bluff, the iconic red roofs of The Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort and Spa nestled in the foreground below. Of course, not all of the roofs here are red these days. Scattered among them when I snapped this photo back in March are a few blue tarps, tell-tale signs of the storms of 2017. While much of St. Croix’s villas, small boutique hotels like The Fred and Arawak Bay, and this fabulous/historic property recovered quickly from the island’s brush with Hurricane Maria some nine months ago, larger properties like Carambola have not been as lucky. The resort continues to house relief workers, though it won’t be open for regular guests like you and me until the early half of 2019… Hopefully. Until then, we’ll still have this view to savor, while giving thanks that the majority of the roofs here remain red.
