Up Next: My First Trip to Sint Eustatius
I was born and raised in the Caribbean. I’ve also spent the bulk of my 30-year career promoting travel to the region. As such, I’ve seen and experienced just about every corner of the West Indies. To be sure, the list of islands that I haven’t visited is way smaller than the number of destinations I’ve come to know first-hand. Tops on that way smaller list: Sint Eustatius…until now. That’s right, I’m finally about to make my first trip to Sint Eustatius!
What/Where is Sint Eustatius?
Never heard of St Eustatius, or Statia as the island is more commonly known? Don’t fret. The tiny Dutch Caribbean delight located 39 miles due south of St. Maarten/St. Martin is little-known even in my home region. We here at Uncommon Caribbean haven’t really done a great job raising the island’s profile either. I mean, we have published a handful of interesting posts about the place over the years. Without having experienced Statia for ourselves, though, our content has been limited at best.
All of that is about to change in a big way, of course, and I, for one, could not be more excited about it!
Childhood Dream Come True
This first trip to Sint Eustatius is nothing short of a dream come true for me. In actuality, it’s the culmination of a dream that stretches way back to my childhood growing up in St Croix.
My lifelong curiosity with Caribbean history and the cultural differences that distinguish our islands was hatched back then. As I touched on in this earlier post on hiking up and into the Quill Volcano, Statia was among the places that fascinated me the most.
To finally have the chance to set foot there and revel in all that Sint Eustatius has to offer is just beyond exciting.
Seriously, somebody pinch me!
Help Me Make My First Trip to Sint Eustatius Uncommonly Great
As with every one of my initial trips to a new place, I’m hoping that you can make it extra-special.
If you’ve ever visited St Eustatius and know of any special people, places, or things that I should not miss, please let me know in the comments below.
Thanks and see you soon, Statia!
