Saturday Soundtrack: Sunset in Jamaica

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ahh, sunset in Jamaica… It’s a magical time filled with amazing sights, sounds and, quite often… smoke. When I snapped this image of the sun setting over Tek it Easy Island at this popular Montego Bay resort last Friday, you could say there was a bit of a haze in the air.
I was inspired by the moment to share a few of my favorite reggae songs today that would make an ideal soundtrack for just such a scene. Peter Tosh, Barrington Levy and Jacob Miller are a few of the names featured in the mix that you might recognize, but lesser-known artists like Big Joe, Jah-T and the Reggae Crusaders are also included.

Honoring Bob Marley Through the Magic of His Music, Then and Now

shot

I was only 10 years old, but I can still remember bits and pieces about the day Bob Marley died. It was exactly 30 years ago today, and while I don’t remember what day of the week it was, I know for sure that we were at school. I know this because I vividly remember coming home and noting that a few things were amiss.
For one thing, the TV was off. In those days, popular daytime soap operas like All My Children and General Hospital would air during the afternoon hours in St. Croix. My Mom loved them, especially All My Children, but she wasn’t watching them that day.

Saturday Video: The Perfect Reggae Vibes for Mother’s Day

sizzla

As Mother’s Day is coming up tomorrow, we’re setting the perfect mood with two of the top reggae anthems saluting all Moms, Sizzla’s Thank You Mama and Capleton’s Mama You Strong. It’s been nearly 24 years since my brothers and I lost our Mom, so as you can imagine, Mother’s Day has ranked among my least favorite days of the year for quite awhile. In the five or so years since Sizzla’s hit was released, though, the song has helped to make the day a bit brighter for me. In the lyrics and rhythms I’m reminded of the good times and the special relationship we shared.

Celebrate Caribbean Culture with Third World at Love City Live!

Love City

Any trip to St. John is guaranteed to reward the uncommon traveler with treasure. I’ve always thought this (or something like it, anyway). I may have been born and raised on a similarly small and beautiful tropical island just about 40 miles south, but St. John always seemed different to me… a quintessential paradise… magical, like a place you’d find at the end of a rainbow.
If you’re lucky enough to be in St. John later this month, you’ll be able to enjoy a new and unique addition to the island’s normal collection of treasures – the very first Love City Live festival.

On-Site Old San Juan: Reggae Night at La Sombrilla Rosa

Jesus watches over the revelers at La Sombrilla Rosa/SBPR

Anyone who likes to party would absolutely love Old San Juan. If you haven’t been there in awhile, though, take note: it’s now illegal to wander the streets of the old city with drink in-hand.
No really, take note! This party-pooping precept doesn’t fall under the broad and nebulous category of illegal activities that aren’t necessarily enforced with vigor in the region. They’re actually serious about this, something I learned first-hand when I happened upon the bar pictured here during my most recent trip to Puerto Rico last September.
This is La Sombrilla Rosa, a small, out of the way bar located in the back streets along the northern section of Old San Juan.

Taste of the Caribbean: Eat @ Cane Bay’s Gourmet Reggae Brunch

Amazing!!!/Stephanie Hanlon

Editor’s note: Uncommon Caribbean was never intended to be a strictly boy’s club, though we’ve somehow managed to publish 300+ stories without a single female viewpoint! No es bueno. Today, we correct this oversight with the 1st guest contribution by Stephanie Hanlon, a newspaper reporter based in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Imagine … eggs benedict with foie gras and truffle hollandaise sauce, a passion fruit mimosa, and home grown live reggae music, all while perched above the Caribbean Sea on the undeveloped north shore of St. Croix.
Well, you don’t have to imagine.
That is just some of what Eat @ Cane Bay on the V.I.’s “Big Island” offers every Sunday during Reggae Brunch.

Saturday Video: Memories of Bob Marley & the Beach

Marley

It’s a sunny Saturday here in Fort Lauderdale and that means one thing in my house: we’re headed to the beach!
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always yearned to rush to the beach pretty much any time I see the sun shining in the sky. This even applies to my years living in New York when cooler days made a sweater more handy than a swim suit. For me, there’s no better therapy than a few hours spent amidst sand, sun and surf.
The soundtrack on many of my beach trips is a well-worn mixed-tape I made back in high school featuring my favorite Bob Marley songs.
