On-Site Montserrat: Olympic Marathoner to Challenge Keener in Volcano Half-Marathon

run

Looks like team Uncommon Caribbean is going to get a run for its money in the 2nd Annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon.  Today, Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent, veteran of the Sydney and Atlanta Olympics, landed in Montserrat. He was immediately whisked off to the radio station ZJB, where he announced his intention to win the race and beat the current record of one hour, thirty-six minutes. Later, he sat with our own Patrick Bennett on the veranda of Olveston House for a video interview, in which he not only repeated his bold prediction, but supported it with a mind-boggling list of marathon victories and record times throughout the West Indies.

“Don’t get scared” – Countdown to 2nd Annual Volcano Half-Marathon

Annual Volcano Half-Marathon Medals

“Don’t get scared…”
That’s how a recent email began from the fine folks at the Montserrat tourism board. The email then went on to point us toward a link displaying the course and elevation map for the race coming up in just over a week.
“Don’t get scared…”
That’s quite the way to begin an email about a half-marathon that we already know runs awfully close to an active volcano. What else could we possibly be scared of? How about a course with two elevation changes of over 600 feet in under 2 miles?! And those aren’t the only large hills.

I’m Running Around an Active Volcano… What are You Doing for Thanksgiving?

Woodlands Beach, Montserrat

Editor’s note: A couple weeks ago, Patrick shared a post on how his training is coming along, err, not coming along for the upcoming Montserrat Half Marathon. Today, we have an update from Patrick’s running mate, Dave Keener….
It’s true. This Thanksgiving, there will be an empty chair at my Uncle Tom’s house in Morris County, New Jersey. My friend Patrick and I will be on our way to the island of Montserrat to take part in the 2nd annual Volcano Half-Marathon.
I love telling people here in New York that I’m running a half-marathon in Montserrat. First, there is the look of admiration, realizing they stand before a real man of adventure in an age with so few heroes.

Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon, Here We Come!

Montserrat by rachel_thecat via Flickr

Yes, you read correctly. I’ll be representing Team Uncommon Caribbean in the 2nd annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon!
This is one West Indian event simply too uncommon to pass up. Not only does it take place on the beautiful, yet woefully under-visited island of Montserrat, but the “rugged & strenuous” course also promises to be a very hilly one with spectacular sea-views all along the way. Oh, and of course there’s the active Soufriere Hills Volcano to contend with…
This is the same volcano that, after a long period of dormancy, erupted in 1995 burying the old capitol of Plymouth under a fast-moving pyroclastic cloud of superheated rock and debris, and has remained active ever since.

Saturday Video: Stick! Stick! Stick!

Puma

Remember the great series of Puma ads that debuted ahead of the 2004 Summer Olympics? These are some of our favorite Caribbean-themed ads of all-time because a) they’re funny, and  b) they showcase a very local, down-home side of Jamaica that we love.
Just say the words “stick, stick, stick” and most anyone who was around at the time will know what you’re talking about. What is somewhat less known, however, is that among the young Jamaican runners featured in the commercials is none other than global track and field superstar and reigning world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt. He was only 16 at the time, but already displayed the chops that have made him an icon of sport on the world stage today.
