Poet Reef Sunset Pain and Pleasure
Pain, as much as anything else, engenders strong memories. Generally, those memories are negative. We’re talking pain, after all. In the case of the memory pictured above, though, pain and pleasure are sweetly symbiotic to me. It was getting near sunset at Poet Reef, the swanky cut stone villa that I called home for several nights in late-August/early-September 2022. Prime time to head out on the pier and enjoy the show perched above the sea. For me, on this day, that meant angling one of the solid, handcrafted wooden lounge chairs in direct line with the setting sun. Only problem was, I angled one of the hefty leg supports right into my big toe. The bloody mess was soon cleaned and bandaged. The throbbing pain coursing up from my beneath my shattered toenail, though, only worsened with each passing minute. The further the sun dipped toward the horizon, the more it hurt. All that pain, though, did precious little to dampen my delight at the incredible Poet Reef sunset. With a nice rum in hand, waves crashing the ironshore beneath me, and limited ability to move, this painful Poet Reef sunset experience was just about perfect.
