Up In The Air Cocktail Recipe (Rum + Sorrel Version)
Up in the air…
No phrase more accurately applies to daily life for most of us right now. Week #4 for COVID-19 quarantine is about to kick off for me, with another four to go (minimum). As noted last week, the extra time at home with the family has not been all bad. Still, I can’t help but fight back FOMO over the travel plans I had for the coming weeks.
An Easter escape to visit my Dad in Tobago… My first-ever trip to South Caicos… A return visit to Dominica to check out a secret new rum distillery…
These were to be my late-spring/early-summer travel adventures. Now, as they say, it’s all up in the air.
In the spirit of life’s prevailing uncertainty, I’m spending this Friday Happy Hour dreaming of future Caribbean adventures over a drink tailor made for the times. Its name: the Up In The Air Cocktail.
- 1.5oz White Rum
- .5oz Lime Juice
- .5oz Sorrel Syrup
I sourced this tipple in my handy Complete World Bartender Guide book. The original Up In The Air Cocktail recipe is right up my alley, calling, as it does, for only three ingredients! Gin, lemon juice, and maraschino liqueur are all you need!
The only problem, though, is that I don’t currently have any gin, lemon juice, or maraschino anything.
No worries. I simply applied the same “use what ya’ got” method that I employed to mix up a Lockdown cocktail last week. The result: a rum and sorrel Up In The Air Cocktail that’s gotta’ be miles better than the original. Here’s how you make it…
Mixing Your Own Up In The Air Cocktail
Dump some ice in your shaker. Add white rum, lime juice, and sorrel syrup. Shake away, pour, and enjoy.
The lime cuts back the rum and the sugary sorrel syrup in equal measure, producing a nice, balanced cocktail that will have your head in the clouds dreaming of your next Caribbean escape in no time.
Cheers!
