Saturday Video: Cabarete, Dominican Republic – Adventure Sports Capital of the Caribbean

Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Awhile back, we clued you in on the amazing kite surfing in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, but as today’s video post shows that doesn’t even scratch the surface on the absolutely amazing thrills available here for active and adventurous travelers. I mean, if this place isn’t the adventure sports capital of the Caribbean then I don’t know what is! Just look at the all the tags listed at the foot of this post!
Surfing, kite surfing, kayaking, horseback riding, canyoning, mountain biking, etc. Not only is it all here in Cabarete, but somehow the folks at Promotions Cabarete managed to squeeze incredible footage of it all (and more) in this tidy two-minute HD video.

Uncommon Attraction: Hike to the Heart of Statia’s Quill Volcano

UWI Seismic Research Centre via Flickr

After years of eschewing any/all calls of the wild, I seem to have settled into a once-a-year hiking routine. Earlier this year, I enjoyed a snake-filled solo-trek along The Mastic Trail in Grand Cayman. This followed a 2010 lover’s romp with my wife up and down The Source Trail in Nevis. It was P-E-R-F-E-C-T!
Then, it wasn’t.

On-Site St. Croix: My Forced Family March to Sandy Point, Pt. I

Hiking to Sandy Point, St. Croix/Kelly Bennett

Traveling with young children is never entirely easy, even when you’re lucky enough to have kindhearted and culturally curious kids like mine. Eventually, even the best kids can snap, rebelling against any parental predisposition toward uncommon travel by unleashing an endless stream of bickering, teasing, tattling and the like. Such was the case on the last full day of my family trip to St. Croix this past summer. That morning it was clear that my kids had grown tired of Crucian history, culture, etc. Saving this day would take drastic measures. No better time to take a hike!

It’s Worth Weathering the Rain for El Yunque National Rainforest

El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico sign

Beaches. Beaches. Beaches. The Caribbean is more than just beaches. So, on our recent trip to Fajardo, Puerto Rico with another couple and their infant, we decided to tear ourselves away from serene Seven Seas Beach long enough to head into the lush island interior.
