Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Awhile back, we clued you in on the amazing kite surfing in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, but as today’s video post shows that doesn’t even scratch the surface on the absolutely amazing thrills available here for active and adventurous travelers. I mean, if this place isn’t the adventure sports capital of the Caribbean then I don’t know what is! Just look at the all the tags listed at the foot of this post!

On-Site Barbados: Surfer’s Bay Beach Bar – No Kooks, No Problems

Surfer's Bay Beach Bar

Luckily Surfer’s Bay Beach Bar isn’t exclusive to those with a penchant for getting tubed, pulling aerials or catching the perfect wave. All you need is a laid-back vibe and you’ll fit in perfectly at this idyllic beach bar on the southernmost tip of Barbados.
On our first visit last year after surfing the afternoon away with Boosy of Boosy’s Surf School, the small bonfire was crackling, lofting glowing embers into the West Indian evening, chill tunes we being pumped from hidden speakers, the open air seating area was lightly bustling with activity, the man behind the bar was flashing smiles at his thirsty flock, a beautiful young woman with a pleasant British accent floated among the crowd letting patrons know when their food orders were ready to be picked up and two local ladies were in the back kitchen efficiently preparing Bajan staples like macaroni pie and fried fish as well as more upscale fare like grilled tuna.

Saturday Video: Surfing in St. Barts

sb

St. Barts is known for offering visitors a wealth of travel treasures the likes of which the majority of us will never know.
Of all the shiny shores throughout the Caribbean, it’s arguable that the ones you’ll find here are the most exclusive. Celebrity sightings are about as common as palm trees everywhere else in the region. Shopping caters strongly toward those carrying platinum cards and the type of cell phones you won’t find at Best Buy. Hotel options are mostly super-chic, luxurious and small – new properties can be no larger than 12 rooms, giving hoteliers an open invitation to charge a hefty premium.

Saturday Video: Dominican Republic Surfing Adventure

dr

Our initial dabbling into the world of surfing has so far taken us to Barbados and Tobago. We’ve also touched on the wondrous waves in Rincón and St. Barts. It’s a small sample size that in no way reflects the fact that fantastic surf conditions can be found all up and down our vibrant island chain. For added proof, check out this amazing Quiksilver Travel video showcasing some seriously fun surfing adventure packages to the Dominican Republic.
As you might imagine coming from one of surfing’s most legendary brands, these are not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill travel packages.
For one thing, they don’t stick you in some McHotel with hordes of leisure lubbers solely bent on partying and playa time.

Caribbean Wallpaper Wednesday: The Sweet Surf and Sights of Soup Bowl, Barbados

Soup Bowl, Barbados

Of all the things Steve and I did on our travels to Barbados this year, I believe I can speak for us both when I say that watching the Barbados Surf Association Junior Championship competitors shredding the swells at Soup Bowl rates among the most memorable.
After our separate initiations into the sport last year (with varying degrees of success), watching these young athletes make short work of such powerful waves was almost enough to keep us in a perpetual state of awe. Combined with the friendly people from the BSA that we met (plus the souse they were serving) and we were in spectator sport heaven.
