On-Site Trinidad: Serene Safari Meets Amazing Avian Spectacle at the Caroni Swamp

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This, was a mistake.

That rueful refrain kept racing through my head at the onset of my excursion into the Caroni Swamp in Trinidad a few weeks ago. It wasn’t fear of the Spectacled Caiman, or the “relatively aggressive” Cook’s Tree Boa snakes, both notable Caroni residents, that had me so unnerved either.
No, the real source of my trepidation was the young 20-somethingish kid sitting next to me on our tour boat. The problem: he was wearing nothing short of his Sunday best.

Get Ready for the 1st Nevis Peak Eco Challenge!

Nevis Peak

Our good friend Reggie Douglas (Remember him from my romantic hike to The Source?) just checked in to give us the heads up on an exciting new sporting event in his home island of Nevis that will have all of you active and competitive travelers itching to be in St. Kitts‘ sister island this September.
The event is called The Nevis Peak Eco Challenge, and like the grueling Volcano Half Marathon that our buddy Dave conquered over in Montserrat recently, this race involves a test of wills contested around a towering volcanic mount. Reggie’s words:

This will be our first time putting on an Eco Challenge consisting of kayaking, mountain biking, and trail running, with a scenic trek up Nevis Peak, which is 3’232 feet high!

Saturday Video: Défis Kayak Race, Guadeloupe

Defis

Every so often you hear about these crazy thrill-seeking adventurers who, for reasons known only to them, attempt to trans-navigate the Atlantic Ocean alone. I’m not talking about people with good sense enough to make the attempt by sailboat either. I mean looney brave souls bent on making the journey by kayak or canoe.

Saturday Video: Cabarete, Dominican Republic – Adventure Sports Capital of the Caribbean

Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Awhile back, we clued you in on the amazing kite surfing in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, but as today’s video post shows that doesn’t even scratch the surface on the absolutely amazing thrills available here for active and adventurous travelers. I mean, if this place isn’t the adventure sports capital of the Caribbean then I don’t know what is! Just look at the all the tags listed at the foot of this post!
Surfing, kite surfing, kayaking, horseback riding, canyoning, mountain biking, etc. Not only is it all here in Cabarete, but somehow the folks at Promotions Cabarete managed to squeeze incredible footage of it all (and more) in this tidy two-minute HD video.

Top 3, Well Maybe 4, Best Dive Sites in Aruba

John (star5112) via Flickr

When most people think of Aruba, they don’t think much about scuba diving. I know I don’t, but then again I’m just starting to dip my toe into the world of scuba fun (more on that next week). It’s true there are tons of great pursuits to, umm, pursue on Aruba’s decidedly dry land, but I’ve learned recently that the island’s undersea treasures are worth checking out as well. Here’s a rundown and some helpful tips on a few of Aruba’s choice dive sites as described to me by some of our new dive buddies in the land of bon bini…

Uncommon Attraction: Hike to the Heart of Statia’s Quill Volcano

UWI Seismic Research Centre via Flickr

After years of eschewing any/all calls of the wild, I seem to have settled into a once-a-year hiking routine. Earlier this year, I enjoyed a snake-filled solo-trek along The Mastic Trail in Grand Cayman. This followed a 2010 lover’s romp with my wife up and down The Source Trail in Nevis. Both journeys were fun and inspiring in their own special ways, but now, with 2012 just a few short days away, I’m planning an even more uncommon adventure to the very heart of a Caribbean volcano!

It’s Worth Weathering the Rain for El Yunque National Rainforest

El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico sign

Beaches. Beaches. Beaches. The Caribbean is more than just beaches. So, on our recent trip to Fajardo, Puerto Rico with another couple and their infant, we decided to tear ourselves away from serene Seven Seas Beach long enough to head into the lush island interior.
