Taste of the Caribbean: Armstrong’s Homemade Ice Cream, ‘Quality at Its Best’ for 112 Years

Armstrong's Homemade Ice Cream, St. Croix/SBPR

Even with our blessed trade winds filling sails and contributing to the good vibes year-round, there’s still one unmistakable fact about summers in the Caribbean that anyone visiting between now and late-September would be wise to consider: it’s hot!
Now, it’s not Africa-hot, or the 100-degree pressure-cooker that is New York City in mid-August, but you definitely work up more of a sweat adventuring around the region this time of year. To date, we’ve provided lots of good drink suggestions to help you keep cool in the Caribbean, but today we’re setting the dial all the way at cold… as in ice-cold, super-yummy ice cream!

Saturday Video: The Greatest American Hero Saves St. Croix

hero

I don’t care how big of a superhero fan you think you are, if you weren’t living in St. Croix in the 1980′s then you probably don’t remember The Greatest American Hero. The stiff and cheesy ABC series only lasted a couple years (1981-83), despite having such big names as Stephen J. Cannell (creator), Robert Culp (actor) and Mike Post (composer) headlining the credits. These guys were behind TV classics like I Spy, Hill Street Blues, and The Rockford Files. I doubt that Greatest American Hero shows prominently in their bios.
Like Crocket and Tubbs, though, the mad-cap caped crusader holds a special place in the hearts of 1980′s-era Crucians.

Uncommon Attraction: St. John’s Anglican Church, St. Croix

St. John's Episcopal Church, St. Croix/SBPR

Whether you’re coming or going in Christiansted, the principal town in my home island of St. Croix, it’s hard to miss St. John’s Anglican Church. The large, historic structure sits astride the main road into town for those traveling from the central and western sections of the island, both more populated than the East End. From here, the main road slopes downhill toward the waterfront, making the tallest spires the town’s highest points.
Ironically, this same location, well away from the more popular historic attractions in the heart of town, also makes St. John’s easy to miss. If you have an appreciation for historic houses of worship, though, it’s well worth the walk up the hill.

On-Site St. Croix: The Certifiably Clean Beach at The Palms at Pelican Cove

The absolutely pristine cleanliness of the marvelous beaches that line our Caribbean shores is easily taken for granted. I mean, when you happen upon a scene like this, filth and pollution are sure to be the further things from your mind. Unfortunately, though, they’re not always the furthest things from our beaches.
So, how can you be 100% sure to enjoy an ultra-clean beach experience on your next Caribbean adventure?

Uncommon Attraction: St. Croix’s Plantation Watch-Houses

Plantation Watch House in Betty's Hope, St. Croix/SBPR

Throughout my home island of St. Croix, as in other islands across the Caribbean, evidence of the region’s colonial past and plantation-based society can be found in the ruins of ancient structures strewn all over the place. They’re so common, in fact, that as a kid growing up around historic relics like the one pictured here, I largely took them for granted. I’d seen a few small hovels like this during my younger days, but never stopped to see what they were about til my last visit home a few weeks ago.
