Taste of the Caribbean: Lemon Lime & Bitters, the Taste that Tops Ting
Ting may be tops in Patrick’s book when it comes to Caribbean sodas, but for me nothing’s better than an LLB!
A product of Trinidad’s legendary Angostura beverage company, Lemon Lime & Bitters is a wonderfully flavorful and refreshing accompaniment to any West Indian dish.
I came to know LLB’s on the first day of a recent visit to my Dad’s place in Tobago a few years ago. I remember it was an especially hot day and I, overdressed from my flight, was dying for some refreshment. My Dad offered me an LLB and I, of course, refused.
Why? Well, you have to know my Dad. He has what some might term eccentric tastes in food and drink. Remember the iguana stew recipe from a few months ago? His Mom once packed that in his lunch to take to school.
I love my Dad, but I’m not always so quick to take him up on his culinary suggestions.
Anyway, a few Caribs later I decided to try this LLB stuff. At the first sip, I was hooked! LLB has a very fresh taste, with the added zing from the bitters making it truly unique.
This uniqueness, though, is not a purely Caribbean phenomenon. The drink actually has roots in Australia, where the alcoholic version has been the preferred libation at the 19th hole among the country’s golfers for years. Apparently, the tradition of enjoying an LLB after a round of golf has been passed down through the generations in Australia. My Dad passed it down to me while limin’ on his verandah, which is just as good, right?
